A bold pledge to protect: The Victorian Opposition's promise to provide free MenB vaccines is a life-saving initiative.
The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has applauded the commitment made by the Victorian Liberals and Nationals to offer free vaccinations against the deadly meningococcal B infections. These infections can lead to devastating consequences, including meningitis, septicaemia, and even death, often within a day of the first symptoms. Victoria has already recorded 14 cases this year, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
But here's where it gets controversial: While the ACWY vaccine is freely available under the National Immunisation Program, the MenB vaccine, which is equally crucial, comes at a cost of $110-150 per dose for most. This disparity has prompted RACGP Victoria to urge the State Government to follow suit and provide free vaccines to at-risk groups, especially after the tragic loss of 16-year-old Levi Syer.
Dr. Anita Muñoz, Chair of RACGP Victoria, praised the Opposition's commitment, emphasizing the unpredictability of meningitis and the importance of vaccination. "Levi's death is a stark reminder of why we need universal access to the MenB vaccine. It's not fair to leave families vulnerable to all strains, especially when we have the means to prevent it."
The RACGP has long advocated for free MenB vaccines for children under two and teens aged 15-19. "Meningococcal B is a deadly disease, killing one in ten patients and leaving survivors with permanent disabilities. We have the power to prevent these tragedies, and it's time for Victoria to step up and ensure no family has to bear the financial burden of protection."
And this is the part most people miss: Meningococcal B has become the leading cause of meningococcal disease, yet we have a safe and effective vaccine. It's time to take action and aim for zero deaths. The question remains: Will Victoria lead the way in providing this crucial protection to its residents?
