On a chilly winter morning, these two friends, who come from humble backgrounds, found a large, sparkling rock on a piece of land they had recently leased. Little did they know, this rock would be their ticket to a brighter future.
When they presented the stone to the official diamond evaluator, Anupam Singh, they were informed that they had struck gold, or rather, diamond. The evaluator revealed that their find was a rare 15.34-carat gem-quality diamond, one of the finest natural diamonds in existence. The estimated value? A whopping $55,000 to $66,000, a life-altering sum for these young men.
But here's where it gets controversial... The government holds regular auctions for such diamonds, attracting buyers from all over India and even abroad. The estimated price, according to Mr. Singh, depends on the dollar rate and benchmarks set by the Rapaport report, a leading authority on diamond and jewelry market analysis. So, the final price could be even higher!
Mr. Khatik and Mr. Mohammed, the youngest sons in their families, are overjoyed. They come from poor families, and this diamond find is a godsend. "We can now get our sisters married," they exclaimed. Their families, like many in Panna, have been searching for diamonds for generations, hoping to strike it rich.
Panna, a district in Madhya Pradesh, is one of India's most economically challenged regions, facing poverty, water scarcity, and unemployment. Ravi Patel, Panna's district mining officer, believes these friends were incredibly fortunate. "They leased the plot on November 19th, and within a few weeks, they found a gem-quality diamond. It's their luck!" he exclaimed.
While they haven't received the money yet, Mr. Khatik and Mr. Mohammed remain hopeful. "We're not thinking of buying land or expanding our businesses just yet. Our focus is on getting our sisters married," they said.
